Devics - My Beautiful Sinking Ship

DEVICS
My Beautiful Sinking Ship

Melancholy is not the word for Devics. The best approximation I can give is Tori Amos fronting the Bad Seeds, while retaining Nick Cave's misanthropic streak. This album is so heavy-going it's like trying to swim through treacle, I imagine. Standout track is the opener ‘Hearts And Hands’, a five minute opus highlighting the voice of vocalist Sarah Lov. It's so captivating the song finishes before you realise hardly any music has been played, with the majority of the pattern. Despite being around since the mid-nineties, Devics' studied melancholy probably keeps them in obscurity in the US, while people snap up the angst-by-numbers currently being churned out, depressingly.
